Patrick Moloney to ride in France

Friday 7 June 2013, 1:29pm

Victorian apprentice Patrick Moloney will represent Australia in a race for young riders at Chantilly in France later this month.

Australia will be one of eight countries represented in the Future Racing Stars sponsored by Longines, a race for 14 young and apprentice jockeys at one of France's premier meetings, the Prix de Diane (French Oaks).

The 1800m race on June 16 is restricted to jockeys and apprentices up to the age of 25 that are enrolled in a jockey school.

Riders from Australia, United Kingdom, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, South Africa and the United States will take part.

Moloney is indentured to his father Gerard at Caulfield and is the grandson of Jim Moloney, trainer of champion 1960s sprinter Vain.

"I'm absolutely pumped," Moloney said.

"I am ecstatic to be offered the opportunity and to be going overseas for the first time and ride on a world class stage. I'm just rapt."

The horse and jockey combinations will be decided by a ballot two days before the race.

"We get an opportunity the morning before we race to ride our horse at trackwork, so I will get a good feel for the horse then," Moloney said.

Moloney, who will be accompanied by his father and Racing Victoria representative Ron Hall, said he hoped to stay on after the race to do some sight-seeing.
