Apprentice Dolan uses weight to advantage

Saturday 12 January 2019, 6:25pm

Robbie Dolan is a lightweight on the scales but his ability in the saddle continues to grow with the apprentice claiming a winning treble at Randwick, a week after his first double.

The benefit of his weight has never been more apparent than being able to claim three kilograms on Single Bullet who originally had 52kg in Saturday's Summer Sprint (1000m).

It gave Single Bullet a 12-1/2 kilogram advantage over Jungle Edge who had three-kilo claimer Chelsea Hall aboard.

The popular Jungle Edge ($4.80) took up his customary role as the race leader and had the field covered with the exception of Single Bullet ($2.80 fav).

Try as he might, Jungle Edge could not hold off the Gary Portelli-trained Single Bullet who assumed control and went to the line 1-1/4 lengths in front of the eight-year-old.

"I actually weigh 47 kilos," Dolan said.

"Nobody really noticed until Mr Waller put me on and I won on his horse.

"This horse was doing it easily and let down very well to win."

Dolan rode the Waller-trained Gresham at 49kg to win a week ago when he also won on the Joe Pride-trained Easy Eddie.

Although only five horses contested the Summer Sprint, Frolic ($9) added her name to the pleasing performances of the top two. with her third, albeit 2-1/4 lengths behind the runner-up.

Second to the Portelli-trained She Will Reign in the 2017 Golden Slipper in which Single Bullet ran 13th of 16, Frolic has been plagued by problems since including bone chips and a throat issue.

Dolan showed he could also carry dead weight when he brought up win No. 2 on the Kris Lees-trained Turnberry who carried 58kg to win the 1500m-benchmark 78 race.

The second-elect at $4.20, Turnberry was in a handy position as the favourite Thy Kingdom Come led into the straight before being tiring in the run to the line.

Turnberry had a length to spare on Devlann ($81) with Brother In Arms ($12) another head third.

Dolan ended his stellar day with victory inthe 100m-benchmark 78 on the John O'Shea-trained Live And Free who also carried 58kg after Dolan's claim.

"I can't do it without the horses so I'm very happy," Dolan said

"I was pretty confident coming here with a few live chances and thankfully we got them on the board."

"He was my best chance."

"He was cruising. I was just looking for the right gap and thankfully it came."

Dolan now has 15 city wins for the season and is closing in on Sam Weatherley who has 18.
