Another Qld trainer outed on cobalt charge

Sunday 12 August 2018, 5:52pm

Another Queensland trainer has been disqualified for 12 months on a cobalt related charge.

Stewards opened an inquiry after a urine sample was taken from the Darryl Gardiner-trained winner Time Out at the Monto meeting in central Queensland on April 7.

The hearing heard the sample indicated an elevated level of cobalt.

Gardiner pleaded not guilty to a charge of presenting a horse to race with a prohibited substance.

After taking evidence at a resumed inquiry Gardiner was found guilty and disqualified for 12 months to finish on August 9, 2019 and Time Out disqualified.

Gradiner is expected to appeal the decision.

New Zealand trainer Nigel Tiley has been fined $5000 after Megablast was shown to have a total plasma dioxide (TC02) concentration level of 36.3 mmol/L after running in the Queen's Cup at Caloundra on July 14.

Tiley was charged with administering an alkalinising agent to Megablast during the one clear day before 12:01am on the day the gelding was scheduled to race.

He pleaded not guilty but after taking evidence Tiley was found guilty and fined.
