Sleek and stylish fashions at Randwick

Saturday 27 April 2013, 6:10pm

The autumn racing carnival may be over, but its effect off the turf on the fashion fields will likely linger to next season, stylists say.

The Sydney Cup day at Randwick on Saturday marked the end of the autumn carnival and plenty of racegoers embraced the modest, demure and covered-up dress code, despite the spring-like temperatures.

Elegance was key with the ladies' looks dominated by seasonal tones of black and white, in sleek and polished cuts.

That's likely to stick around in spring, racing stylist Karli Butson said.

"It's all about really clean lines, and everything will be very chic coming this next season," Butson told AAP on Saturday.

"I think it's really nice to keep it traditional. You don't want to come to the races dressed like you're going out on a Saturday night.

Butson said women should keep this season's dress code in mind when dressing come spring.

"You don't want to wear a really short, or strapless, dress to the races, anyway," she said.

"Keep it classy and ladylike, and that can still be sexy."

As for headgear, it will all be about the bold and the beautiful.

"There will be big hats, and they will be very extravagant," millner Neil Grigg said.

Think elegant, but with punches of bright colour, he said.

"There will be a real theatricality about it (because) when you come to the races you pose," he said.

"It's the drama in the way that you put things together."
