Churchill Dancer on trial for Vic spring

Friday 26 April 2013, 4:36pm

Any thoughts David Hayes had of sending Churchill Dancer to the paddock after his last-start win were erased when the trainer saw a stakes race at Caulfield he felt was there for the taking.

Churchill Dancer broke through at his fourth start with a three-quarter length victory in the $180,000 VOBIS Gold Ingot at Flemington two weeks ago.

Hayes thought about giving the two-year-old a break after that race but decided to press on with Saturday's Caulfield event over 1200m an opportunity to chase a black-type victory.

"I looked at the program and thought, `why not win another one'," Hayes said.

He said the gelding had trained on nicely since his Flemington win.

"It looks a good race for him," Hayes said.

"He'll probably run in this and then I'll put him aside. I thought I'd try to get him a bit of black type."

The Mick Kent-trained The Huntress, who closed quickly for an impressive debut win at Sandown last week, is favourite ahead of Churchill Dancer.

The performance of Churchill Dancer is set to give Hayes a guide on whether the gelding is to be aimed at a Caulfield Guineas preparation next time in.

"He's on trial for the Guineas on Saturday," the trainer said.

Hayes has a runner in stakes races for two-year-olds in three states on Saturday, headed by Fast `N' Rocking who is one of the leading chances in the Group One Champagne Stakes in Sydney.

Upside Rock is entered for the Listed Dequettville Stakes in Adelaide.

The trainer's Adelaide runners also includes Alzora and Global Balance in the Group One Australasian Oaks.
