Vintage Cellarman uncorks another win

Saturday 3 February 2018, 3:53pm

Cellarman has continued his resurgence with a dogged win at Rosehill, vindicating Chris Waller's call not to spike the durable gelding's preparation.

The four-year-old gelding racked up his fifth win from eight starts when he claimed the Sydney Markets Foundation Handicap (1500m) on Saturday to push his earnings part $300,000.

"We were talking about spelling him three starts ago after he got beat. Fortunately we didn't because he's got a bit of money in the bank now," Waller said.

Cellarman ($6.50) capitalised on a smart ride from Blake Shinn to hit the line three-quarters of a length clear of King Darci ($3.60).

Flow, the $2.90 favourite, lost impetus in the three-way tussle down the straight to place a long neck third.

Cellarman launched this campaign last July and in November he finally complemented his maiden win in the Listed Wintergarden Stakes at Eagle Farm in 2016.

"He was at the crossroads at the end of his last prep," Waller said.

"We had high expectations after he won a Listed race at Eagle Farm, then he went missing.

"You often see that with two-year-olds and fortunately the owners have been patient and stuck with him."

Cellarman, who supplied Sydney's premier trainer with his fourth successive win at the meeting, will target another 1500m race this month.

"He's just a good advertisement for our stable. We manage to keep them up a long time," Waller said.
