Jubilee unlikely for Moonlight Cloud

Thursday 25 April 2013, 9:54am

Moonlight Cloud is likely to be campaigned predominantly over a mile this season making another bid for the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot unlikely.

Freddie Head's mare nearly caused a huge shock at Royal Ascot last year when she closed to within an head of the recently-retired Black Caviar.

While an attempt to win a third Prix Maurice de Gheest over six and a half furlongs (1300m) is on the cards in August, the rest of her campaign is likely to be over a mile (1600m) despite her disappointing display over that distance at the Breeders' Cup.

She did win the Prix du Moulin previously, backing up Head's claims that she stays the distance.

"I've put her in the Diamond Jubilee again but I don't think she'll go," Head said.

"Obviously there's no Black Caviar this year, but I'm looking at campaigning her over a mile this season, rather than six furlongs, although one of her main aims will be to win another Prix Maurice de Gheest.

"She's very well at the moment but I'm not sure where she'll start off yet.

"I think she gets the mile well and that's what we'll be looking at."
