Riocetto to chase Group One Champagne

Monday 22 April 2013, 5:56pm

Neville Voigt might be the only person in Sydney hoping for a repeat of Saturday's wet conditions at Randwick where he produced Riocetto as a surprise winner of the Fernhill Handicap.

The two-year-old broke his maiden in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) and will take an even bigger step up to the Group One Champagne Stakes over the same distance.

Former jockey Voigt, who won the Champagne 30 years ago aboard Lady Eclipse, said he knew it was a pipe dream but a gamble worth taking.

"You never know, it might rain again like it did the other day although it doesn't look like it at the moment," Voigt said.

"He's a little horse improving and he loves the mud.

"I was very happy when it rained.

"It's a big rise in company in the Champagne but we'll have a go."

Riocetto has had just three starts and will be taking on some youngsters already well schooled in stakes races headed by Group One Sires' Produce winner Guelph and runner-up Scandiva.

Voigt has high hopes Riocetto will develop into a three-year-old who can get over a distance.

"I always knew he would be better the further he went," he said.

"He could be a nice Derby horse next year."

Riocetto's owner Vive Williams who races many horses in partnership with her husband Glenn including Karuta Queen, could get two chances to win the race with Star Wars also among the 15 entries.

The Scott Asprey-trained Star Wars failed to make any ground in the Fernhill, finishing eighth, 15 lengths from Riocetto.

Fernhill runner-up Fuerza who battled on 4-3/4 lengths behind Riocetto has also been nominated for the Champagne along with recent Group Three winner Champollion, a stablemate of Guelph.
