Kerrin McEvoy has had the cast removed from his broken hand as the top jockey's recovery from injury continues.

McEvoy cracked the third metacarpal of his right hand while attempting to restrain the Kris Lees-trained mare Sugar Bella en route to the barriers at Randwick on December 16.

He needed a plate and screws inserted to mend the break.

"The operation seems to have gone well. The hand still has a little bit of bruising and swelling but I've got nice enough movement, which I'll keep progressing over the next few weeks," McEvoy told Sky Sports Radio.

"It's just one of those things. It was bad luck."

McEvoy, who had his cast removed on Tuesday, hopes to be back riding track work by the end of the month.

Sugar Bella, who was scratched from the race, made a successful return last Saturday.

Among McEvoy's big wins last year were the $10 million Everest and Darley Classic on Redzel with the star sprinter set to make his comeback in the Lightning Stakes at Flemington on February 17.
