Fresh Anthemoessa set for Gold Coast trip

Trainer Matt Cumani has decided to roll the dice with Anthemoessa and head to the Gold Coast without giving her another run.

The two-year-old is 14th in the order of entry for the $2 million Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic on January 13 and looks assured of a start.

Cumani had considered starting Anthemoessa up the straight at Flemington on Monday but has decided to keep the filly fresh for the Gold Coast.

Anthemoessa has finished second at both her starts to date.

On debut she chased home La Pomme De Pin in the Ballarat Clockwise Classic before being run down by Ollivander over 1100m at Caulfield on December 16.

"We were a little bit worried whether she'd get in or not but I think we probably will," Cumani said.

"I had nominated her for a race at Flemington on Monday just in case but I was never really keen on running as I didn't want to over-race her.

"For me the whole point of two-year-olds is you can make use of their precociousness early but you also have a horse left at the end to race into their three-year-old year.

"I want to look after her but we'll be definitely taking the opportunity to take her up to the Gold Coast as you don't get too many chances to run for two million dollars."

Cumani's other Magic Millions hopeful Akkadian is staying home for a short break after failing to figure in the placings at Warwick Farm on December 23.

Akkadian needed to win that race to confirm a trip to the Gold Coast and Cumani said in hindsight it may prove a blessing in disguise.

Cumani said he doubted the two-year-old would have been suited over the 1200m at the Gold Coast.

"Our Sydney expedition was in hindsight a waste of time but I'm glad we had a crack at it," Cumani said.

"I thought he ran a really good race despite having no luck.

"I can give him a couple of weeks off now and then get him up for some 1400-metre and 1600-metre races in the autumn."
