Plantinum Kingdom wins despite waywardness

Saturday 20 April 2013, 2:53pm

The occasion of Doncaster day at Randwick almost got the better New Zealand three-year-old Platinum Kingdom but his raw ability was enough for him to win a Listed race at his first Australian start.

After trying to toss Jonathan Riddell off as he went onto the track for the South Pacific Classic (1400m), Platinum Kingdom took a sharp sidestep as he raced to the lead inside the final 75 metres.

All was well that ended well with Riddell all smiles after the race.

"We were not thinking as one," Riddell said.

"I could sense what was going to happen before the race and I managed to jump off and land on my feet.

"He wants to get on with things but he caught me by surprise when he ducked out. I couldn't feel it coming at all."

Platinum Kingdom ($12) handled the heavy track with aplomb, beating Casual Choice ($5) by 1-1/4 lengths with Limes ($4.20) another 1-1/2 lengths third.

Platinum Kingdom is the first horse sent to Sydney by trainer Lisa Latta who stayed in New Zealand on Saturday leaving her partner Bruce Herd in charge.

"We think he is a fair sort of a horse and the plan is to take him to Brisbane," Herd said.

"He gets on the toe a bit but he gives a hundred per cent."

Stewards put a warning on Platinum Kingdom but Riddell reassured them he would be better prepared for his next ride on the gelding.

"It was his first time right handed," he said.

"I'll carry the whip in my left hand next time."
