Nivo to defy breeding to become a stayer

Friday 13 October 2017, 10:26am

Co-trainer Daniel Guy has a solid reason to believe promising filly Nivo can develop into a stayer despite her breeding.

Nivo steps out to 1600 metres for the first time in the Three-Year-Old Handicap at Doomben on Saturday.

Guy, who trains Nivo with his father Bryan Guy, has plenty of knowledge about Nivo's breeding.

Nivo is by former strong sprinter Rothesay out of Pinot Girl, a mare by former champion sprinter Iglesia.

"Pinot Girl is an oddity with the Iglesia breed as she could stay," Daniel Guy said.

"She was originally trained by John Sargent in New Zealand and she won a couple of staying races there.

"John brought her to Australia and left her here with us and we won a couple with her including one at 1800 metres."

Guy said Nivo showed every indication that 1600m and further would suit her.

"She has run third at her past two stats at the Sunshine Coast and you could make a case to say she could have won them both," Guy said.

Damian Browne rode Nivo at her last start and suggested she would improve with winkers.

"We have taken Damian's advice and the winkers should help at her first go at 1600 metres, " Guy said.
