Geelong start costly for favourite backers

Friday 8 September 2017, 5:13pm

Confusion has reigned in a race at Geelong after a number of runners appeared to be denied a fair start.

Correct weight was delayed following the fourth race on Friday as Racing Victoria stewards inquired into the start of the 1000m maiden.

After conferring with starters, speaking to all nine riders and looking at the video of the start stewards declared Lil' Bit Sassy the only non-runner.

RV steward James Hitchcock told broadcaster Racing.com Lil' Bit Sassy was being held by an attendant when the barriers opened.

He said the barrier for Royale Effort was slow to open, but because the gelding finished in the placings he was ruled a starter.

"It was clearly evident on the film that its barrier didn't open simultaneously with the other runners," Hitchcock said.

"But because it was placed third the rules provide that horses placed first, second or third cannot be declared a non-runner and it was deemed a starter."

The race was won by first starter Lakota, ridden by Dwayne Dunn.

The $2.70 favourite Spring Choice, ridden by Stephen Baster, was pulled out of the race soon after the start.

Hitchcock said Baster was of the belief the race would be declared a no-race or that the starter may have raised the false start alarm.

"You have to play the umpire's whistle, so it was declared a runner," Hitchcock said.
