Miss Arabella set for bright city future

Wednesday 6 September 2017, 3:55pm

Stoutly bred mare Miss Arabella confirmed she was a stayer of the future with her dour win at Ipswich on Wednesday.

Despite hitting a couple of flat spots during the race Miss Arabella ($2.60) ground out a win in a Benchmark 75 Handicap (1680m).

Miss Arabella, who has won three of her nine starts, is by a noted sire of staying horses in High Chaparral out of stakes-winning mare in Pentacity.

Pentacity, who is by another top staying sire in Pentire, won the Listed 2008 Gold Coast Bracelet and was second in that year's Group Three Doomben Roses when trained by Bryan Guy.

Trainer Tony Gollan has taken Miss Arabella along quietly and not rushed her into city racing.

"I have always thought we wouldn't see the best of her until she hit 2100 metres or 2200 metres," Gollan said.

"But we have had problems finding the right races for her in the build up," Gollan said.

"I think she can now step up in distance and class in Saturday races."

Toowoomba trainer John Zielke's eye for a possible stayer paid off when The Pinkerton ($31) caused an upset in a maiden race over 2100m.

The Pinkerton is one of the few horses by sire Bullet Train, who is a three-quarter brother to international superstar Frankel, to race in Queensland.

"I picked him out as a yearling and the breeder and my main client the Dovedale syndicate stayed in him," Zielke said.

"He is bred to run 2400 metres and he needed a couple of shorter races to be ready to step up in distance. Also we put a visor on him today."
