Moreira to ride at Valley Gr 1 Moir card

Wednesday 6 September 2017, 12:45pm

Champion Hong Kong-based jockey Joao Moreira is set to ride at the first night meeting of the season at Moonee Valley.

Moreira, who rode five winners at the opening meeting of the new season in Hong Kong on Sunday, will be a part of the action on AFL Grand Final eve, September 29.

The meeting includes the Group One Moir Stakes along with four other stakes races.

"I haven't ridden in a night race at The Valley before, so I'm excited about coming over for Moir Stakes night and I'm sure it will be a great atmosphere," Moreira said.

"I always love coming to Australia, the people are very friendly and they love horse racing, so hopefully I can ride some winners and make the fans happy."

Moreira is also scheduled to appear at an exclusive owners' function hosted by Racing Victoria on Moir night.

The champion jockey is no stranger to winning Group One sprints in Australia having partnered the Chris Waller-trained Brazen Beau in both the Coolmore Stud Stakes and the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington.

Moreira last rode in Australia at Morphettville in May.
