Beach helps Someday's comeback

Frequent visits to the beach have veteran sprinter Someday ready to return to near his best form at Doomben.

Someday hasn't won since the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m) at Doomben in December 2014.

Trainer Desleigh Forster isn't sure he can return to the winners' list in Saturday's Open Handicap (1200m) but she is confident he will run well and show he is still capable of competing in Brisbane.

Originally trained by Kelso Wood and then Tony Gollan, Someday resumed for Forster when 11th to Calanda in the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton on July 12.

He had spent a year in a paddock after his previous start in February 2016 before being put back into pre-training and then heading to Forster's stable at Eagle Farm.

Forster is noted for her work with older horses and she has carefully mapped out Someday's comeback.

"Our farrier is friends with Someday's owners and he was the one who suggested they give him to me because of the beach work I do with my horses,," Forster said.

"It wasn't a bad run first up in the Ramornie but it was always going to be too short and they did run a course record.

"I've given him a lot of long steady beach work and he has had a trial since the Ramornie.

"He's got such a high rating that he got a big weight (59kg) on Saturday. But I think this race will top him off nicely to be competitive in longer races."

Forster said she was sure once Someday got out to 1350m and then 1600m he would be near his best.

"I know he is a nine-year-old now but he is a class horse and the open company races are not strong at the moment," she said.

Robbie Fradd who won on Lady Lark for Forster on Wednesday will ride Someday.

He got acquainted with the veteran when they were fourth in a Doomben trial two weeks ago.
