Dulverton chasing black type in Heatherlie

Wednesday 30 August 2017, 6:00pm

The Robert Smerdon-trained Dulverton will chase some valuable black type in her final race start in the Listed Heatherlie Handicap.

Connections are having a throw at the stumps in Saturday's 1700m handicap at Caulfield with the mare who has won five of her 26 starts but is yet to finish in the first three in eight attempts in stakes company.

The five-year-old netted back-to-back city wins earlier this preparation before finishing in the placings at her past two starts in town against her own sex.

Dulverton has barrier four in the field of 15 for what Smerdon said would be the mare's final start before she is served by Zoustar in the upcoming breeding season.

"She's racing the best she has ever raced," Smerdon said.

"She is way out of the handicap there on her rating but it's a Listed race so you roll the dice and you hope she can finish in the money somewhere.

"She's won four city races but she's got no black-type. If she could manage to fill a place she will have improved her CV. But she's off to stud anyway."

Smerdon believes the good barrier is crucial for Dulverton.

Dulverton is one of two Smerdon-trained mares being readied for their final starts on Saturday, with stakes-winner Every Faith also going to stud after running in the Chandler Macleod Plate (1400m) for mares.

Smerdon said Every Faith, who has won seven of her 39 starts, was to be served by Medaglia D'Oro.

The trainer decided not to accept with Ability in Saturday's $1 million Group One Memsie Stakes after assessing the strength of the opposition.

He said there were plenty of other spring options for the gelding.
