Veteran Captain Clayton can become only the second 11-year-old to win an open company race at a Queensland metropolitan standard meeting when he runs at the Gold Coast.

Captain Clayton will be having his 76th start in Saturday's Open Handicap (1800m).

The gelding has been racing for eight years and won his first race in an Eagle Farm maiden on August 19, 2009 when trained by Robert Heathcote and ridden by Damian Browne.

He has since had two other trainers and is now with his owner George Sitek at Ipswich.

Captain Clayton has been best known as a sprinter but has stepped up in distance as he has got older.

He scored his 11th win at Beaudesert two starts ago and was an unlucky fourth at Kilcoy at his last start.

The oldest horse to win a metropolitan standard race in Queensland is Ollie Vollie who won in March 2014.

Among flat horses, Mustard holds the Australian record for a metropolitan win as a 13-year-old when he won at Rosehill in 2010,

In recent years the rules have changed and 12-year-old horses need veterinary clearance to race and are retired when they turn 13.
