Saint Patrick's Day returns to work

Sunday 20 August 2017, 2:12pm

Talented Saint Patrick's Day is back in trainer Chris Munce's stables but will miss the spring with the Magic Millions carnival in mind.

Saint Patrick's Day won the Listed Dalrello Stakes at Eagle Farm in April, beating subsequent Group One winner Capital Gain.

A month later he was fourth on a wet track at Eagle Farm in the Group Two Queensland Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) in which he again finished in front of Capital Gain.

Munce was then forced to scratch the colt from the Group One J J Atkins.

"It was a pity we couldn't press on with the Atkins. It wasn't anything serious but mainly growing pains and I didn't want to risk him," Munce said.

"I would rather have a horse as a three-year-old than ruin him by going one run too far."

"I am not knocking Capital Gain who did a great job in the winter. But my bloke beat him home twice in black-type races so there is a good form line there."

Saint Patrick's Day arrived back at Munce's Eagle Farm stable on Saturday and will go into light work this week.

"I am taking my time with him and won't rush him to get to Melbourne for a race like the Sandown Guineas," Munce said.

"I will run him in the summer three-year-old races in Brisbane with the Magic Millions Guineas in January his main aim."

A multiple Group One-winning jockey Munce had his best season in 2016/17 since he started training 2-1/2 years ago with 49 winners including four in stakes class.

"We have some nice young horses coming through and some good two-year-olds from last season who should be ready to win more races," Munce said.
