Justice bound for Rupert Clarke, Toorak

Scales Of Justice flies out to Melbourne on Thursday off the back of yet another victory - this one off the track - having been announced on Monday night as Western Australia's Horse of The Year.

Trainer Lindsey Smith said on Tuesday that the five-year-old, who has never missed a place in 17 starts, celebrated in style as he prepared for his first flight and for his greatest challenge.

"He didn't care - he just got a bag of carrots and he was as happy as anything," Smith said. "But I suppose it's a bit of recognition for the horse and he deserves it for what he's been able to do."

Smith is hoping that Scales Of Justice will also gain eastern-states recognition this spring in the two races he has mapped out for the horse: the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400 metres at Caulfield on October 1 and the G1 Toorak Handicap over a mile at the same track 13 days later.

Smith said he decided to take the opportunity to get to Melbourne when it arose.

"There's a trotter coming (to Melbourne) so we're sharing the cost and I decided to come on the plane a little bit earlier than I'd planned but we'll go down to Jarrod McLean at Weir's stables at Warrnambool," Smith said.

"He's used to that sand environment here. It's a bit heavier sand here. He's had a few preparations on the heavy sand at home so his residual fitness will never leave him now so he won't take long to come to hand."

Smith said he will try to emulate the most recent campaign undertaken by Scales Of Justice over Perth's winter months.

"We gave him a 1400 (metres) first-up here into a mile into a 2000 just to have a practice to see how he'd handle it," he said.

"He raced well over 1400 metres and obviously improved a little bit after that so we just thought we'd take the first two steps and see how high we can jump."
