Meagher continues run for Waratah

Saturday 12 August 2017, 12:14pm

Trainer John Meagher has continued his recent run of success for the Waratah Thoroughbreds syndicate, with Monteux winning at Doomben.

Jockey Michael Cahill camped Monteux ($2.90) on the early pace in the Help Enterprises Open Handicap (2040m) on Saturday and they held on to beat the $2 favourite Mr Epic by a short neck.

Monteux, who was a $370,000 yearling, has taken time to reach his best and Saturday was only his 20th start.

He was originally trained in Melbourne by Peter Moody and won up to 2400m at Caulfield.

"Monteux is one of three horses Waratah sent to me and I think we have won four races for them in recent weeks," Meagher said.

"I will have to look around to see what is here for him in coming weeks but I would one day like to win a Ballarat Cup with him."

Waratah Thoroughbreds is headed by Paul Fudge and has had Australia-wide success in recent years.

"They have horses which are suited to Brisbane and I was lucky enough to get some of them," Meagher said.

Cahill said he went out with a plan to ride Monteux closer to the pace.

"He always had the leader covered and he fought on well in the straight," Cahill said.
