Runaway's success kicks off Tulloch triple

Wednesday 9 August 2017, 2:42pm

The breaking of two colts' maidens has contributed to a flawless day at Canterbury for Tulloch Lodge.

Gold Standard and Runaway both cruised to victory on Wednesday before four-year-old stablemate Street Pursuit came from behind in the day's final race to make it three from three for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Runaway, far too good for Wednesday's field over 1550m after being beaten last start by classy colt D'Argento, is now being directed on a path to the longer Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

There are no set plans for Gold Standard, who impressed when he quickened in the final stages of the 1200m-race to win by 1-1/4 lengths.

"They've always shown the ability and class to progress to that type of grade," Bott said.

"They're some of our nicer colts, two different style of colts.

"Runaway seems to be improving with each start, doing well physically, strengthening all the time and today was just the first day we've seen him put it all together."

Bott is wary of throwing Gold Standard in the deep end too early but said the colt was nominated for both the Golden Rose (1400m) and Caulfield Guineas (1600m) later in the spring.

"Gold Standard has a little bit more speed, but he'll still be effective stepping up to the mile," Bott said.

"We'll look at the options for him and get him to those races anyway."

Apprentice Rachel King pleased both her stable and the owners with the win on Street Pursuit who came from a handy position to run past frontrunner Fortensky.

"I've had three out of three for the owners so hopefully that keeps going," she said.
