Jim Byrne suspended after big Doomben haul

Saturday 5 August 2017, 5:08pm

Jockey Jim Byrne's big day at Doomben came to a halt when stewards suspended him on a careless riding charge.

Stewards alleged Byrne, who was riding eventual winner El Campeador in race three , had caused interference to Michael Cahill on Skillful.

Byrne pleaded guilty and stewards found he was responsible for low-level interference.

He was suspended for eight days, starting at midnight on Sunday August 13.

Byrne rode four winners at Doomben to take an early lead in the jockeys' premiership.

"I could have ridden at least two other winners but I am not complaining. Any day you ride four winners can't be bad," he said.
