Basil Nolan's golden plan is working

Thursday 3 August 2017, 2:42pm

Breeder Basil Nolan's two-edged plan to promote his sire Golden Archer is set to pay dividends again at Doomben.

Nolan owns Lady Lark who will contest the Three-Year-Old Handicap (1615m) and he hopes the filly can win her first Saturday race to add to her stud value.

Lady Lark is by Nolan's Group-winning sprinter Golden Archer who stands at his Raheen Stud on the Darling Downs.

"Golden Archer was the leading first season sire in Queensland by winners and prize money. He had eight individual winners in Australia and one in Singapore," Nolan said.

"We wanted to give him every chance to get good mares and also to get a good reputation through his own progeny."

"Firstly, we have raced some of his fillies with the idea of helping him build a name as a sire of future broodmares."

Nolan has also been to the sales around Australia looking for mares he thinks will be suited to Golden Archer.

"It has been a conscious decision to get younger mares and we have some very nicely bred types who should make lovely broodmares," Nolan said.

Lady Lark won her first start in a mid-week race at Eagle Farm and has since been placed five times behind some of the best two-year-olds in the state.

Trainer Desleigh Forster is confident Lady Lark can back up after finishing second at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

"Through no fault of her own, she got into trouble at the start when there was interference to runners in front of her," Forster said.

"Provided she continues to please me she will run Saturday. One thing she should run a strong mile and a few of the others might not."
