Strong winds predicted for Caulfield races

Friday 28 July 2017, 5:51pm

The final Victorian metropolitan race meeting for the season at Caulfield will be run in testing conditions with high winds forecast for Melbourne.

Saturday's nine-race meeting features the Group Three Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) and Caulfield track manager Jason Kerr says gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour have been predicted for the area.

"They are tipping the winds to pick up tonight and average 60 to 70 kilometres per hour tomorrow with gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour in the Caulfield area," Kerr said on Friday afternoon.

"So we're expecting a fairly rugged sort of day.

"There's not many precautions you can take from the wind but certainly there's no immediate issues with the meeting going ahead.

"Obviously it will be monitored during the day."

Strong winds would likely have an impact on race tactics for jockeys and connections during the meeting.

"The way it pans out for Caulfield, it makes it a really strong headwind down the side and as they turn into the home straight it becomes a cross wind," Kerr said.

"So it will be fairly rugged sort of conditions."
