Cabeirian returns to racing as a gelding

Thursday 27 July 2017, 2:21pm

Promising two-year-old Cabeirian is expected to be more tractable after being gelded when he makes his much anticipated return to racing at Doomben.

Trainer Kelly Doughty entered Cabeirian for both Doomben on Saturday and Ballina on Friday.

But she elected to head to Brisbane when the youngster drew barrier three in the Two-Year-Old Handicap (1050m).

Cabeirian washeavily backed when he made his debut at Eagle Farm in January before finishing fourth to Paradis Imperial.

Doughty immediately sent Cabeirian to be gelded and for a spell.

"Let us just say he was very boyish in his only race start. But he has shown us plenty on the track and we wanted a racehorse not a stallion," Doughty said.

"The only reason he wouldn't have come to town was if he drew off the track which can be a disaster from that start at Doomben.

Cabeirian has had two trials in preparation for his return, winning the latest at Ballina.

"The trial was good but he has to reproduce that on the racetrack," Doughty said.

Cabeiran was ridden by Luke Rolls in the trial win but Michael Cahill takes over on Saturday.

"Michael has never ridden better and we wanted an experienced jockey on him," Doughty said.

They have had a lot of success breeding winners including stakes-winner Flamboyer, Cabeirian's half brother.

Doughty has elected not to run Flamboyer in the Open Hcp (1350m) at Doomben.

"The tracks have been a bit hard and there are plenty of other races for him," she said.
