Brave Song settles into rhythm for maiden

Wednesday 26 July 2017, 2:11pm

Promising colt Brave Song has secured his maiden win at his second attempt at Canterbury with Hugh Bowman stealing an early march on Sydney jockeys' premiership rival Brenton Avdulla.

While Avdulla sat out the first three races on Wednesday after his rides were scratched, Bowman took advantage by steering the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained two-year-old to a comfortable victory in the first race.

Brave Song, the $2.15 favourite, enjoyed a smooth run from the jump and reeled in the pacesetters with ease to score by three lengths from Sparky Lad ($3.50)

Paul Snowden was delighted Brave Song built on an encouraging debut at Canterbury on July 5, when second behind the Chris Waller-trained Calculated

"It certainly franks his run the other day. He was a little bit new to the caper and did a lot wrong," Snowden said.

"He arguably should have won, he's bounced back with a nice solid win.

"It was pretty much in his keeping after 50 yards."

Snowden said while Brave Song had been slow to mature, he was now getting to grips with racing.

"His first trial, you wouldn't have seen him in the picture, the ambulance was hitting him up the backside," he said.

Bowman backed up in the next race to win on Nictock to extend his premiership lead to 2-1/2 wins over Avdulla.
