Super Haze gives McEvoy Flemington double

Saturday 8 July 2017, 3:42pm

Tony McEvoy saddled up two runners on Flemington Finals Day and the trainer has walked away with a winning double.

After emerging star colt Royal Symphony remained unbeaten with an emphatic win as the $1.50 favourite in the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final for two-year-olds, stablemate Super Haze claimed the feature staying race on Saturday's program - the Banjo Paterson Series Final (2600m).

Ridden by Luke Currie, Super Haze settled midfield before being produced on the outside in the home straight.

Currie held the gelding together before asking for a supreme effort over the final 300m and Super Haze ($8) raced to the front and went on to defeat Granddukeoftuscany by 1-1/4 lengths with Charlevoix another 2-1/4 lengths away third.

"This is a horse we thought a fair bit of," McEvoy said.

He said he felt the gelding was unlucky not to win the 2800m race on the Melbourne Cup day undercard at Flemington last spring.

"Then he sort of lost his way a little bit and his form in Adelaide has been OK," McEvoy said.

"But that was his true form today. He loves Flemington, loves a bit of galloping room, and Luke was superb on him. He was really patient and smooth."
