Nic's Vendetta takes out Highway Handicap

Saturday 8 July 2017, 3:11pm

A horse who barely leaves her side has rewarded apprentice jockey Mikayla Weir with an instant city result at Warwick Farm.

Nic's Vendetta held off the favourite Suncraze to win the Highway Handicap, giving Weir her first metropolitan winner from her first ride in the city.

The result didn't go down well with punters as the odds-on favourite Suncraze was relegated to second for the sixth successive start.

But it was hard to begrudge Weir her moment.

"It's pretty special for me," Weir said.

"I have been involved with this horse for about three preparations now.

"I do everything with this horse. I ride him every day."

Weir had the Todd Howlett-trained Nic's Vendetta travelling in second position behind Buddy Honest who was a tearaway leader.

As Buddy Honest started to tire, Nic's Vendetta hit the front while Suncraze still had four lengths to make up despite taking a short cut on the home turn.

In a photo finish, Nic's Vendetta ($9) had a half head to spare over the $1.65 elect Suncraze, ridden by Corey Brown.

Since winning at Dubbo at the start of the racing season, Suncraze has been runner-up six times, a frustrating record that includes another Highway Handicap placing at Randwick
