Your Way set for comeback on home track

Wednesday 5 July 2017, 2:29pm

Trainer Bjorn Baker will welcome back potential black-type mare Your Way to racing on her home track after a virus slowed her progress during autumn.

The four-year-old was in a rich vein of form heading towards The Championships but instead went to the paddock when the illness was detected after she won at Randwick in February.

"I wanted to keep her going in the autumn but she got a bit of a virus and we had to put her out," Baker said.

"She's coming back in good order and if she does everything well we may even consider hitting an early spring black-type race."

Your Way has won seven of her nine starts and four of her past five.

"She's an exciting prospect," Baker said.

"You don't get a record like hers without being a very genuine, capable horse."

Your Way resumes at Warwick Farm on Saturday when she lines up in the Schweppes Handicap (1100m) with stablemates Embley and Sangiovese.

"She's got a bit of weight to contend with (60kg) but she's a good filly," Baker said.

Providing the comeback goes to plan, Baker said Your Way will be stepped up to 1200 to 1400 metres during this preparation.

Embley also resumes in the same race with Baker conceding the distance did not suit the five-year-old gelding.

"It's obviously going to be too short for him but you've got to kick off somewhere," he said.

Sangiovese is fourth-up and looking for a smooth run after a last-start fifth at Randwick a fortnight ago was influenced by a riderless horse, Esgrimidor.

Baker also has the in-form Collateral seeking to extend his winning streak to five in a 2400m Benchmark set to be raced on soft ground.

"He's got an ominous wet-track record with his last four wins being in the wet but I do get the impression he'll be good on top of the ground," Baker said.

Like Your Way, Collateral is weighted heavily (60kg) with apprentice Nick Heywood has been booked to claim 2kg.
