NZ's Johnson third in riders' championship

Wednesday 5 July 2017, 6:53am

New Zealand's Danielle Johnson has finished third in the inaugural Lady Jockeys' Thoroughbred World Championships in Sweden won by Maryline Eon representing France.

Johnson won the first of the five races at Bro Park near Stockholm but Eon's two wins gave her the title over Sara Slot from Denmark who won the final event.

The series was designed to promote Scandinavian racing as well as give female riders more international opportunities.

Former ABBA star and leading Swedish owner and breeder Benny Andersson was a notable backer of the competition.

"It's been good racing, competitive and hard to predict," Andersson said.

"I am a feminist really which means providing equal opportunities for all, but I am happy to support the Lady Jockeys' Thoroughbred World Championship as it brings riders from all over the world and focuses international attention on racing in Sweden."
