Rekindling wins in Ireland for Williams

Monday 3 July 2017, 12:36pm

The Lloyd Williams-owned Rekindling is likely to tackle the Irish St Leger after getting the better of experienced stayer Wicklow Brave in the Curragh Cup.

Unplaced in the Epsom Derby last month, Rekindling reeled in the favourite Wicklow Brave to win by half a length.

Williams has several horses in work in Ireland with Aidan O'Brien but Rekindling is in the care of the champion trainer's son Joseph who said the St Leger was a target.

"He had a little bit of class and there was a chance he would be a little bit better than them," O'Brien said.

"It looked today like he could be a Leger horse. He did well to go and get Wicklow Brave. He's a very good horse.

"There is Doncaster and the Irish Leger. He has to go to one or the other and he he probably has to go somewhere between now and then as well."

The Williams-owned Order Of St George ran second to Wicklow Brave in the 2016 St Leger with the latter unplaced in the Melbourne Cup.

Aidan O'Brien unveiled a possible Caulfield Cup contender at Sunday's meeting when Johannes Vermeer won the Group Three International Stakes (2000m) under Ryan Moore.

"Ryan said he travels well and quickens well but doesn't do an awful lot when he gets to the front," O'Brien said.

"Ryan said he could be a Caulfield Cup horse."
