Nesbo gives Krongold a win to remember

Saturday 1 July 2017, 5:39pm

A recent addition to Dean Krongold's Kyneton stable has given the trainer the thrill of his first Saturday metropolitan winner.

Krongold was sent the former Mick Kent-trained Nesbo by the gelding's owners about a month ago and at Caulfield on Saturday the seven-year-old finished strongly to take out the Moorookyle Park Handicap (1400m) in his first start for a year.

"It's unbelievable," 35-year-old Krongold said.

"I was actually waiting for his condition to fade out a bit there but he just travelled so well to the turn and had cover the whole way even though he was wide.

"He finished off well and has done a terrific job."

Krongold worked for several stables before going out on his own a couple of years ago to train his own team and he has four horses in work.

"Days like this makes it all worth it," he said.

"I wasn't expecting that. I've been in the game for 15 years and you've worked tirelessly for other trainers and then you go out on your own and it's hard work to start up. And now to get a result like this is phenomenal."

Nesbo ($41), which was returning from a suspensory injury, made it three wins from five first-up attempts and took his record to six wins from 21 starts.

He travelled wide with cover to the turn before finishing down the outside under jockey Harry Coffey to beat Here To There by a half-neck, with Airalign a long neck further back in third.

"We knew he was a class horse when he came to the stable. He's lengths better than anything I've got so to get a win with him was phenomenal," Krongold said.
