Michael Cahill riding a winning wave

Thursday 29 June 2017, 5:32pm

After thinking he would have a low-key winter, jockey Michael Cahill has genuine chances at the Sunshine Coast to add the his three stakes winners over the carnival.

Cahill will ride Self Sense in Saturday's Listed Caloundra Cup, Maryore in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap and Top Of The Range in the Group Three Sunshine Coast Guineas.

He won the Group Three W J Healy Stakes on Burning Passion at his first ride for trainer James Cummings last Saturday.

His other stakes wins have been the Listed Ipswich Cup (Self Sense) and the Listed Oxlade Stakes (Pardoe).

Cahill missed the Doomben meeting on Wednesday and went to Ballina where he rode a treble including his 22nd winner for the season with Caloundra based trainer David Vandyke.

A Brisbane premiership-winning jockey, he as ridden 55 winners for the season including in eight the past fortnight.

"Things didn't look too good at the start of the carnival as I wasn't expecting to have too many rides in the big races," Cahill said.

"Sometimes it is like that when the horses you have been riding don't come up."

"But some nice rides came along and so did a coupe of winners. It hasn't turned out too bad."

Cahill said Self Sense should be suited by the 2400m of the Caloundra Cup.

"He races like a true stayer and if he gets the right track conditions he will be hard to beat," he said.

Maryore was a close second at her last start in the Spear Chief Stakes and Cahill believes the big Sunshine Coast track will suit her.

Top Of The Range was a good fourth in the Queensland Guineas and Cahill believes he will just have to overcome a wide barrier draw.
