Encosta De Lago Claims Another Broodmare Title

Retired champion sire Encosta de Lago has galloped away with the broodmare sires titles by money, winners and wins for the second successive year.

Encosta de Lago’s national broodmare statistics for 2016/17 at June 20 stands at 260 winners of 402 races and $17,320,914, an amount that has bettered Danehill’s national broodmare earnings record established in 2010-11 of $17,248,376.

He clinched theis season’s title from Zabeel and Danehill after the Lonhro 4YO Impending, a son of Encosta De Lago’s top class daughter Mnemosyne, won the $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben on June 10.

The Encosta de Lago stats for 2016-17 do not tell the full story of his broodmare contribution as his Australian sired daughters have also had offspring successful in New Zealand, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia and South Africa.

So far they take his overall tally for the season to 308 winners of 472 races including 23 stakes wins and $23,824,850.

It is the second successive year that Encosta de Lago has been the most successful broodmare sire for Australian racing, earning the honour in 2015-16 with 248 winners (15 SWs) of 400 races and`$16,725,854.

Taking in the overseas representatives, his broodmare figures last season added up to 293 winners (17 SWs), 479 wins and $22,545,498.

His career broodmare stats for Australian sired stock currently reads approximately 885 winners of over 2400 races and $92 million.

He is the broodmare sire of over 70 black type winners, among them nine successful at G1 level.

Twice champion Australian sire and runner up four times, Encosta de Lago wil have at least four sons at stud this year in Australia - Delago Deluxe (Newhaven Park), Manhattan Rain (Blue Gum Farm), Needs Further (Armidale Stud) and Rubick (Coolmore Stud) and another two out of his daughters - Divine Prophet and Distinction.

Impending’s dam Mnemosyne, joint top filly in the 2005-06 after wins in the G1 Caulfield Thousand Guineas, G1 Rosehill Queen of the Turf, G2 Rosehill Tea Rose Stakes, G2 Randwick Furious Stakes and G2 Warwick Farm Silver Shadow Stakes, ranks among his best daughters..

Mnemosyne has supplied four winners led by Impending, winer of the G1 Stradbroke, G2 ATC Stan Fox Stakes and third in the G1 Golden Rose.

Her other progeny include Forget (Exceed and Excel), winer of the G3 Newcastle Cameron Handicapo and five races in Sydney) and Memorial (Street Cry), a two time Sydney winner and G2 placed.

Mnemosyne was the best of the seven winners produced by My Juliet, a Listed winner by Canny Lad out of Perfect Draw.

A smart Melbourne performer by Whiskey Road, Perfect Draw is from Proud Draw, an unraced Vain half-sister to Golden Slipper, AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes and VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Full On Aces and Top of the Pack, a Sydney winner and second in the G2 VRC Ascot Vale Stakes.

They were the first foals of Better Draw, a Better Boy mare who won ten races up to 2500m including the G2 VRC Queen Elizabeth, G2 VATC Sandown Guineas and G3 Tranquil Star Stakes and finished second in the G1 AJC Oaks, G1 VRC Mackinnon Stakes and G1 Australian Cup and third in the G1 WS Cox Plate.
