Flamboyer to back up in Eye Liner

A combination of factors has influenced trainer Kelly Doughty to back up noted wet tracker Flamboyer in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m) at Ipswich.

Flamboyer resumed at Doomben last Saturday when 11th to Miss Gunpowder in the Listed Hinkler Stakes (1200m).

Doughty said the run was a lot better than it looked on paper as Flamboyer was only three lengths behind the winner.

"He had trialled well, winning one at the Gold Coast in the lead-up. He was in the lead but they did attack him," Doughty said.

She said the probability of a wet track at Ipswich on Saturday was one of the factors which had influenced her decision to run him in the Eye Liner seven days later.

"It is no secret these days he is better on rain-affected tracks. He has never been out of the place on a heavy track," she said.

"And he does go well at Ipswich with two wins from two starts at the track. Throw in his very good record at distances around 1300 metres and it is encouraging.

"He has drawn right off the track but that isn't always bad at Ipswich because it is a long run to the first turn."

Flamboyer is rising seven but Doughty is confident the gelding can race on for another season to add to his nine wins and $543,000 prize money.

Doughty said Flamboyer's main aim was the Listed Glasshouse Mountain Sprint at the Sunshine Coast in a fortnight.

"He has raced well up there before so it looks the race for him," she said.
