Another record looms for Jim Byrne

Friday 16 June 2017, 12:03pm

There could be no better track than Ipswich for jockey Jim Byrne to break another record.

Byrne is having a great winter with his Stradbroke day double on Capital Gain (J J Atkins) and the Chocante (Brisbane Cup) added to his win in the Group One Doomben 10,000 (Redzel) last month.

The Stradbroke Handicap Day double took Byrne to eight stakes winners for the Brisbane season.

He already holds the equal record at nine which he reached last season to emulate Brian York's effort from 30 years ago.

In all Byrne has ridden 64 stakes winners in Brisbane metropolitan meetings including five at Group One level.

Byrne has a great chance to pass the season record with keys rides in stakes races at Ipswich on Saturday.

He rides Perfect Dare in the Listed Eye Liner (1350m), Dee Nine Elle in the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) and Paragon (Ipswich Cup).

Byrne has won 10 Ipswich premierships and is well on the way to No.11 this season.

"It's been especially pleasing to win a Group One with so many top Sydney and Melbourne jockeys here. They are world class riders," Byrne said.
