Promising Vic apprentices to head overseas

Wednesday 31 May 2017, 5:14pm

Two Victorian apprentices will be given their chance to impress on the international stage.

Lachlan King, son of former champion jockey Steven King, will represent Australia at the Longines Prix Future Racing Stars in France next month.

The 1600m race for apprentice riders will be run at Chantilly on June 17.

King follows in the footsteps of fellow Victorian apprentices Tahlia Hope, Jessica Payne, Patrick Maloney and Beau Mertens to compete in the race.

He will ride alongside apprentices from South Africa, the US, Japan, Turkey, Morocco, England, Ireland, Germany and host country France.

Apprenticed to Gerald Egan, King is yet to ride in the metropolitan area but has ridden 35 winners since starting out last year.

Ethan Brown is heading to Newmarket in England on a six-week stint with William Haggas.

Apprenticed to Mick Kent at Cranbourne, Brown leaves next month before returning to Australia in August for the start of the 2017-18 season.

Originally from Alice Springs, Brown has ridden 59 winners, seven in the metropolitan area.

"Mick thought it would be a good idea for me to head over there and ride out for William Haggas," Brown said.

"I can't wait to get over there and see how it works.

"I'm also heading to Royal Ascot which is an added bonus."
