Sharp Speedo punt pays off

Wednesday 24 May 2017, 1:05pm

Trainer Chris Anderson's decision to pay up for Sharp Speedo in the Queensland Oaks has proved a wise one with the filly winning at Ipswich.

Sharp Speedo is one of 21 second nominations taken on Wednesday morning for the Group One Oaks (2400m) on June 3 and her win a couple of hours later should ensure she gets a run.

The Chris Waller stable heads the Oaks second entries with seven including likely favourite, Australasian Oaks winner Egg Tart, and the smart Dawn Wall.

Waller is hoping to get Gold Coast Bracelet winner Dawn Wall to the Oaks after she was scratched at Doomben last Saturday with a temperature.

Kenedna and Ana Royale, who were second and third to Egg Tart in Adelaide but have both won since, were also among the second nominations.

Anderson is keen to run Sharp Speedo, who won a QTIS Three-Year-Old (2100m) on Wednesday.

"We paid the second nom at 9am and now she is qualified for the field. It was a bit of punt but it paid off," Anderson said.

"She only cost $20,000 and she has been super tough"

"I don't know if she can beat the top fillies but just to have her run would give us all a thrill."

Sharp Speedo is owned by Sydney businessman Jae Jang.

"He now has seven horses with me but it would be great to get the first one to race to make a Group One field," Anderson said.
