Lucky Liberty gains start in The Goodwood

Thursday 18 May 2017, 1:35pm

First emergency Lucky Liberty has gained a start in the $1 million Group One Goodwood in Adelaide and trainer Henry Dwyer expects the talented gelding can run a big race.

Local hope Viddora was scratched from Saturday's Goodwood on Thursday morning because of a foot abscess, securing the Dwyer-trained Lucky Liberty's place in the 1200m race at Morphettville.

The five-year-old, who has been restricted to only 12 starts because of injury issues, has had support and is a $19 chance.

He will travel from Victoria early on Friday.

"He's going as well as I think he can," Dwyer said.

"We've always thought of him as a Group One horse but having only been lightly raced due to injury issues we haven't really been able to test him at that level other than in the Australian Guineas as a three-year-old when he chipped a knee.

"It's good to get him back to this level. We didn't think we would after all his issues, but I think he's going as well as he can so now is the time to test him at this level.

"I'd be disappointed if he didn't finish in the first four or five with even luck."

Dwyer says next month's Group One Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane is the main goal if he can secure a start.

Because Lucky Liberty was an emergency, the trainer does not have to confirm a jockey until Saturday morning.
