Mount Panorama finally sheds maiden tag

Wednesday 17 May 2017, 4:26pm

Three-year-old Mount Panorama has shed his title as Australia's best performed maiden.

Mount Panorama, the $1.45 favourite, was having his 13th start when he came from the tail of the field to beat Witness ($31) by 1-3/4 lengths in a Maiden Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast on Wednesday.

Trainer Gary Moore has high hopes for Mount Panorama, who took his prize money total to $91,000 with his first win.

"He will have a freshen up and then head to the Fred Best Stakes and the Queensland Guineas," Moore said.

Winning jockey Luke Dittman was impressed with the win.

"He had a bit on those and he mowed them down quickly in the straight," Dittman said.

Sydney three-year-old Shine Tak Star ($8) remains on course for a start in the Queensland Derby with his strong win.

The John Sargent-trained gelding had to travel deep for most of the race but was strong at the finish.

"It was a good effort under 59 kilos. He is here for the Derby but he will have to step up again to get there," stable representative Kim Wells said.

Jockey Damian Browne had to overcome difficulties to win on Jackpot ($12).

"I lost my whip at the 200 metres so it was a tough effort by him to fight back and win," Browne, who rarely travels the 160km from his Caloundra base to the Gold Coast, said.

Well-bred gelding More Patasi ($8) continued to repay his $220,000 price tag when he made it two wins in a row.

Winning trainer Kelly Schweida was full of praise for the horse and winning jockey Tiffani Brooker, who took her metropolitan season tally to 40.
