Winter wins 1000 Guineas for O'Brien

Monday 8 May 2017, 9:33am

Winter has given trainer Aidan O'Brien a Guineas double with her win in the fillies Classic at Newmarket.

A day after Churchill took out the 2000 Guineas, Winter claimed the Sunday's 1000 Guineas from her more fancied stablemate Rhododendron for jockey Wayne Lordan.

Winter was formerly trained by David Wachman who retired last year.

"I'm obviously delighted," O'Brien said.

"David always thought the world of her and told us she was going to be a Classic filly.

"Wayne gave her a great ride. She's a fine, big mare.

"The second horse ran a great race. She came home very well.

"She's a filly that's going to stay very well."
