Galileo Rules the Guineas

Coolmore's champion sire Galileo achieved a memorable Group I double over the weekend with his son Churchill capturing the Group I English 2,000 Guineas and then his dashing grey daughter Winter taking out the Group I English 1,000 Guineas.

Winter - Coolmore

The Aidan O'Brien trained Winter forged clear of her more fancied stablemate Rhododendron (also by Galileo) to win the one mile classic by two lengths, her overall record now two wins and three placings from five starts.

It was the first Black Type win for a promising filly on the up that was trained last season by David Wachman.

"I'm obviously delighted," said Aidan O'Brien.

"David always thought the world of her and told us she was going to be a Classic filly. Wayne (Lordan) gave her a great ride. She's a fine, big mare. Wayne said a mile and a quarter should be no problem for Winter. After that you're never sure, but that's a good sign.

"The second horse ran a great race. She came home very well. She's a filly that's going to stay very well. Ryan thought going out that she would stay very well in the future and we thought she could be an Oaks filly.

It was the third time O'Brien had completed the Guineas double and Michael Tabor, part-owner of both winners, paid tribute to the master of Ballydoyle.

"It can't get any better than that," said Tabor. "I suppose the proof of the pudding is in the eating and Aidan is a man full of confidence that does the right thing most of the time.

"His horses seem to improve from two to three and their three-year-old career seems to get better and better. That's the mark of the man."

Winter is the first winner for Choisir's two time speedy winner Laddies Poker Two, whose third dam is French Group I winner Ancient Regime.

Winter is the tenth stakes-winner for Choisir as a broodmare sire and is his second Group I winner joining My Dream Boat.
