Another milestone not far off for Weir

Friday 5 May 2017, 3:08pm

Having already stormed past his previous Commonwealth record for winners in a season, a new mark for metropolitan victories in Victoria looms as the next milestone for Darren Weir.

Weir trained 14 winners from 30 races during this week's three-day Warrnambool carnival which took his season tally Australia-wide to 352, surpassing his mark of 348 from 2015/16.

With just under three months of the season remaining, Weir is poised to set a record in the Victorian metropolitan trainers' premiership, with the standard set by Lee Freedman who prepared 115 winners in 2005/06.

Weir has 110 Melbourne winners this season which have come from 774 starters, and he has runners in five of the nine races on Saturday at Flemington.

They including Zasorceress who is the $2.45 favourite for the TAB/ATA Celebrates Women Trainers Handicap (2000m) and Steggler who shares $6 favouritism in the True Version Handicap (1600m).

Weir trained 106 Melbourne winners last season.

He said this week that while the number of winners had been great, he and his team had gained much satisfaction from the Group One tally in 2016/17.

"We've had seven this season and we thought if we could train six it would be amazing which is one every two months," Weir said.

Weir could add to that on Saturday in Adelaide with Kenedna favourite for the Australasian Oaks at Morphettville.

He also has Scarlett Billows as an outside chance in the Group One Robert Sangster Stakes.

Kenedna, winner of two of the traditional Oaks lead-ups, is at $2.90 ahead of the Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart at $4.20.

Weir and Waller jointly lead this season's Australian Group One tally for trainers, with 12 elite-level races remaining.

Four of Weir's Group One wins have come courtesy of Black Heart Bart while champion Winx has recorded six of Waller's seven.
