Another UAE trainer outed for cobalt

Thursday 26 January 2017, 7:34am

A second Abu Dhabi trainer has been disqualified for two years for a cobalt offence.

Jameel Salman pleaded guilty to racing a horse at Al Ain racecourse on December 2 with a concentration of cobalt exceeding the threshold of 100mcg per litre of urine.

Earlier this month the Emirates Racing Authority handed trainer Majed Al Jahouri an identical ban for a cobalt offence relating to a horse which raced at the same track in November.

The cobalt threshold in Australia was brought into line with other jurisdictions last year when it was halved to 100mcg/L with Victorian trainer Trevor Andrews told earlier this month one of his horses had an elevated level.

Trainers Mark Kavanagh and Danny O'Brien are still waiting to find out the result of their appeals against lengthy bans for cobalt offences under the old threshold of 200mcg/L.
