Le Romain in strong trial win at Newcastle

Wednesday 25 January 2017, 3:19pm

Dual Group One winner Le Romain has impressed trainer Kris Lees with a barrier trial win as he prepares for three attempts at the highest level during Sydney's autumn carnival.

Le Romain was strong late, winning his 900m heat at Newcastle on Wednesday by a length under Mathew Scorse.

"I was very happy with his trial and he came back in good order from it," Lees said.

It was Le Romain's second trial since his Group One Cantala Stakes (1600m) win at Flemington on October 29, the four-year-old's second elite-level victory, the other being the Randwick Guineas at three.

"We put him under a bit more pressure than his first trial," Lees said.

"He showed a good desire to be there so I'm looking forward to getting him back to the races."

Le Romain is set to resume in the Group Three Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 11 as he builds towards the $3 million Doncaster Mile at Randwick on April 1.

He is likely to run in the Group One Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick on March 4 before the Group One George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 18, when he could bump into the world's best horse on turf, Winx.
