Fawke gets first Flemington winner

Saturday 14 January 2017, 6:22pm

Mature-age apprentice Sairyn Fawke has claimed his first Flemington winner with victory aboard Kourkam.

Fawke is apprenticed to John and Chris Meagher in Queensland but is on loan to trainer Tony McEvoy in Adelaide.

Fawke had two rides for McEvoy at Melbourne racing's headquarters on Saturday including Kourkam ($19), which got home in a blanket finish to the Craftsman Handicap (2000m).

"It's my first winner here at Flemington which is a good thrill," Fawke said.

"I'm definitely grateful to Mr McEvoy for supporting me and bringing me over (from South Australia).

"I've come down on a three-month loan at the moment, but we'll just see how I'm going at the end of the three months, and who knows what happens."

Fawke, 26, said he only got on his first horse when he was about 21.

"I only picked it up late and I've loved it ever since," he said.

He spent several months out of the saddle after suffering serious injuries in a fall on Rockhampton Cup day in June 2015.

He said Saturday's victory was his 17th metropolitan success.

"I want to crank out the city winners and hopefully Mr McEvoy keeps supporting me," he said.
