Poland can still ride in Millions Guineas

Sunday 11 December 2016, 10:04am

Heather Poland will be able to ride her favourite horse Eckstein in the Magic Millions Guineas despite getting a hefty suspension for her winning ride on the filly at Eagle Farm.

Poland is developing a great association with the Kurt Goldman-trained Eckstein who gave her a first stakes win in the Listed Mode Plate on Saturday.

Poland has a deep understanding of Eckstein, who can be unruly, having won three races on the filly and she rides her in all her work at Goulburn.

However, Poland's day was soured when stewards charged her with causing interference to several runners at the 900m turn.

Poland pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding after it was alleged she allowed Eckstein to move in when not clear of inside runners and caused them to be checked.

She was suspended for 18 days and will be able to resume riding after January 4.

Eckstein is likely to be among the favourites for the $2 million Magic Millions Guineas on January 14.

Her effort to win the Mode Plate was even better because Poland dropped her whip in the final 100m and the filly also lost a fore plate during the race.
