L'Entrecote beats Doomben rain for top win

Saturday 12 November 2016, 5:38pm

Everything finally went the way of talented L'Entrecote when he beat the rain to earn a chance at stakes racing this summer.

The last three races at Doomben were washed out when a storm battered the track for nearly an hour, dumping more than 37mm of rain.

It was the second time in two months the last three races had been lost at Doomben after a deluge on September 10.

But trainer Kelly Schweida could still smile after L'Entrecote won the last race before the storm.

Schweida is convinced L'Entrocote should have won many more than the seven races his record shows.

"He has had nothing but bad luck with barriers and the way races have been run. It was a perfect ride from Damian (jockey Browne) today after he finally drew barrier one," Schweida said.

Schweida said the Listed Bernborough Stakes at Eagle Farm on December 31 could be L'Entrecote's main mission.

The gelding is owned by Rob Wills and Mike Buys who have put a lot of time and money into racing in Queensland.

"If anyone deserves a good winner it is them," Schweida said.

Trainer Matthew Dunn is also looking to the future with Flitero ($4.80) who made it two wins in a row.

"He is a stayer on the up and we will give him a couple of more starts before looking at some of the better races next winter," Dunn said.

Flitero, a five year old stallion, is out of the Doomben 10,000 winner Flitter but has improved as the distances have got longer.

"He is very easy to train for a stallion and is easy to handle around the stables which is a big start," Dunn added.

Flitero's win gave Dunn and jockey Robbie Fradd a double for the day after winning earlier with two-year-old Saxton Rock.

Apprentice Tiffani Brooker was rewarded for her hard work with the winning ride on Lady Jetsetter ($8) in the Benchmark 80 (1050m).

"Tiffany has been riding work for us and that was her first ride for us," said winning trainer Liam Birchley.

Lady Jetsetter has now won four races at Doomben - all at 1050m.
