Saxton Rock shows true form in Doomben win

Saturday 12 November 2016, 2:00pm

Two-year-old colt Saxton Rock has made a mockery of his debut failure while earning himself a Magic Millions Classic campaign after winning at Doomben.

Saxton Rock ($3.90) came from second last to beat Serious Doubts ($8) by 1-1/2 lengths on Saturday.

It was in stark contrast to his first start at Eagle Farm when Saxton Rock jumped last and ran past two tired horses in the straight to finish eighth.

"He had one trial before the lead-in but then it was just a nothing run at Eagle Farm. He drew much better today I hoped that might make the difference," trainer Matthew Dunn said.

"He isn't very big but when he settled he got on the bit and then he finished the race off very well."

Saxton Rock, who is well bred being by top sire Snitzel, cost $150,000 at the Magic Millions yearling Sales earlier this year.

"He is headed to the Magic Millions Classic but I am just a bit worried about whether he will have enough prize money," Dunn said.

"Saxton Rock earned $40,000 today but the prize money is so much higher in Sydney. I would like to give him just one lead-in run to the Millions but I will have to see."

Winning jockey Robbie Fradd said Saxton Rock had finished well and would be suited at the 1200m of the Magic Millions.
